Blue Zones — Where people forget to die

Dan Buettner and National Geographic identified five regions where people reach 100 at 10× the global rate, with near-zero heart disease, dementia and depression. They have radically different cultures and cuisines — but the common thread is striking: ~95% plant-based diet, daily natural movement, strong social ties, and a sense of purpose.

The Cause

No magic gene, no superfood, no single trick. Instead: stacking nine ordinary habits — Power 9 — over decades. The food piece alone wouldn't do it. The social piece alone wouldn't do it. The combination consistently does.

What You Can Do

  • Move naturally — walk, garden, climb stairs.
  • Have a purpose you wake up for ("plan de vida").
  • Downshift — daily stress-reduction rituals.
  • 80% Rule — stop eating when 80% full.
  • Plant slant — beans daily, meat rarely.
  • Wine @ 5 (where appropriate) — moderate, with friends.
  • Belong — show up to a community weekly.
  • Loved ones first — invest in family.
  • Right tribe — be surrounded by people living this way.
Bottom line

Blue Zones aren't about exceptional individuals. They're about ordinary environments that make the healthy choice the easy choice.
